Looking and feeling wonderful this spring is easy with the help of these health and beauty experts!

Renée’s Health Shop

The Health Nut was established in 2006 by Renée Mitchell when she relocated to Howick. What began as a tiny health store with a small range of whole foods, herbal teas and some tinctures, gradually evolved into a fully-fledged health shop over a period of 12 years. “When the St John’s Lifestyle Centre was launched, it was the obvious progression for us to take up space in the new centre, which is focused on clean, healthy living,” she explains. Now, nearly 14 years since their humble beginnings as The Health Nut, they have chosen to rebrand as Renée’s Health Shop. Carrying the largest selection of carefully chosen health products in KZN, each range has been personally selected by Renée for its purity and, although the store carries products from all over the world, they are currently on a drive to prioritise their locally sourced ranges.

Renée’s interest in health began at a young age. As a young mom, she recalls reading every book on nutrition she could lay her hands on. At the age of 30, she trained as an Ozone Therapist and shortly thereafter decided to take the leap and study Clinical Nutrition. “I later decided to further my studies and chose Naturopathic Nutrition, enrolling with the College of Natural Medicine in Ireland. I embraced the functional medicine approach taught to me by CNM wholeheartedly and still enjoy observing the benefits my clients continue to derive from this progressive healing model,” Renée says.

Renée’s Health Shop is not only a place where you can receive the best natural health advice by a team of ladies who are all passionate about health, but also where you will find a vast offering of natural products to support you on your health journey. Where to from here? With a special interest in herbal medicine, Renée has started to formulate her own blends of herbs to support specific health issues which are commonly seen. You will start to see more and more of Renée’s Herbal Blends creeping onto their shelves. Her beauty advice for spring? “Start each day with a glass of freshly pressed green juice. Make sure it has celery in it for its alkalising and cleansing benefits.”

JLB Sports Massage

Jessica Bentley’s passion for sports massage started in 2017 when she was part of a support team for the Unogwaja Challenge. For a change of pace, at the beginning of this year she decided to open up her own practice, JLB Sports Massage, at The Wykeham Collegiate’s Sport Science School. “I have a Degree in Sports Science from the University of Stellenbosch, so I can offer people a more holistic approach to recovery by incorporating massage with an equal amount of stretching and exercise to help with the alleviation of pain and muscle soreness through massage, stretching and exercise,” she explains. A sports massage isn’t just for athletes! It improves your circulation, boosts your immune system, reduces inflammation, improves sleep, lowers blood pressure and reduces muscles soreness. It also reduces tension and lowers your stress levels. “So my advice for spring would be to try something new and treat yourself to a well-deserved massage,” says Jessica.

Hammam Bath and Body is a small, family-run business established in 2018. We are built on the vision to encourage self-nurturance through soulful partnerships and natural indulgence. They believe in old-fashioned goodness, and import only the best-quality Turkish cotton and Turkish rose bath and body products. “Being health and engineering professionals, we loved our product selection, but knew nothing about business! It certainly has been a soulful journey for our family to have taken Hammam Bath and Body to a warm reception along the coastlines of KZN, and now to the wonderful Midlands,” says owner Saleem Adam. The Turkish cotton towel, or peshtemal, is a versatile length of woven fabric with fabulous absorbency and quick-drying properties, and is one of their products that everyone should try! Their best beauty advice for spring is to nurture your spirit and your skin with wholesome goodness and use natural products, starting with pure Turkish rose water as a daily toner.”

Pura Vida

Pura Vida produces natural skincare and body products that are hand-made in Hilton. They create cruelty-free and environmentally friendly products that work with your skin to balance its natural processes. “Pura vida” is a Costa Rican greeting that means “pure life”, and they have tried to embody these values in all of their products. “We don’t use parabens, petroleum, palm oil, SLS, artificial fragrances and colours, or toxic chemicals. Each jar and bottle is filled with only pure and natural products that actually work. Pura Vida products and ingredients are cruelty-free and are never tested on animals. We have created a routine with fewer products and fewer ingredients that delivers everything you really need for healthy skin that glows. We are very environmentally aware, so our products are recyclable and packed in glass in order to minimise plastic waste.” One of their must-try products is their new natural deodorants. Pura Vida’s top beauty advice for spring is to exfoliate! “The first step on the path to glowing skin starts with exfoliating away the lingering layer of winter.”
