These local businesses will keep you looking fresh, fit and fabulous this summer.

Pause Pilates & Wellness

Pause Pilates & Wellness is located in Meander Square, opposite Gowrie Village in Nottingham Road, offering a BASI (Body Arts and Science Institute) style of Pilates. Owned by Lou Sevel, visitors can enjoy both Pilates equipment and mat classes – private as well as duos or groups.

Lou relocated from the busy Joburg in January 2020 and opened the studio in August 2020, bringing a warm, friendly, very safe and welcoming place to get strong in the Midlands area. The studio has state-of-the-art BASI Systems equipment and includes a Cadillac, Reformer and Wunda Chair – the key pieces of Pilates equipment in a traditional studio. The studio also features a barre and in the New Year Lou hopes to offer clients barre classes as well. The barre classes are best suited for clients who prefer a cardio workout and it also includes music – it’s a fun way to get fit and bring out your inner ballerina.

Pilates literally “has your back”. The benefits depend on the individual client’s focus. It could be strengthening, toning, mobility or rehabilitation. Despite the individual goals, the principles of Pilates remain the same – we work the whole body in every session and start by strengthening the “powerhouse” in order to move better. This requires not only a strong core but also a strong back and hips. Pilates also benefits the mind by making everyday movements easier. Increased mobility and having greater range of movement or motion, like being able to touch your toes for example, results in being able to tie your shoelaces or sit on the floor comfortably to play with your children or grandchildren. It’s an investment in your body that rewards in the soul. Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, said: “Man is only as young as his spinal column.” This is true!

Anybody can do Pilates, and Lou moves as fast or as slow as the client requires and often works closely with medical professionals to guide the trainer and manage the client or patient’s progress. It can be your primary form of movement or it can help you become a better golfer, cyclist or runner. Many of the top sportspeople in the world include Pilates in their workout schedule. In fact, if you are looking for a wonderful way to get in shape not just for summer, but for life, then give Pilates a go!

Pause Pilates & Wellness offers group mat classes on a Tuesday at 16:30 and on a Saturday at 10:00. The studio also offers a class specifically for cyclists on a Wednesday at 17:15. Come and get fit with friends! Private clients can book sessions between 08:00 and 15:00 from Monday to Friday.

Pura Vida

Pura Vida produces a range of fabulous natural skincare and body products that are locally handmade right here in Hilton. They create cruelty-free and environmentally-friendly products that work with your skin to balance its natural processes. Now that summer is here, moisture and hydration are key elements to keeping the skin soft and smooth throughout the hot summer months. Pura Vida has a range of face oil cleansers, toners, serums and eye serums for your skin, all made with organic ingredients that help to keep your skin hydrated without leaving it oily. Owner Di’s best advice for that summer glow is to hydrate! “If you don’t hydrate yourself, no amount of topical products or skincare routines can help you get the soft and radiant skin you desire,” she explains. “Along with hydration is a healthy holistic lifestyle, which includes real and whole foods (organic where possible), enough good quality sleep, exercise and reducing toxic chemicals, so as to live in wholeness and balance.”

Skin Ideology Body + Aesthetics

Skin Ideology owner and therapist, Nicole Van Der Linden, comes with 14 years of experience offering affordable, result-driven treatments through sound homecare advice and focused cosmeceutical, in-clinic therapy. As a family woman, wife and mum of two, Nicole aspires to create the life she wishes to enjoy and cherish.

Skin Ideology Body + Aesthetics targets all skin conditions and concerns. Working with Dermica, K-Surgery, Dermafix Cosmeceutical Skin Care and Mesoestetics, they do a range of skin corrective therapies, relaxing facial treatments, collagen induction treatments, PRP therapy with the Dermapen and Dermajet as well as skin resurfacing procedures.

“I treat the skin and body in a unique aesthetic fashion. Each person is unique and therefore their skin needs will be unique. I look at the overall health as these contribute to skin function and will implicate skin management. Using the expertise I’ve gathered in the aesthetic areas of skincare, I am able to treat the skin at medical-grade,” says Nicole.

When it comes to beauty advice for summer, Nicole’s says it’s good to drink collagen and use hyaluronic acid. Collagen contains the amino acid hydroxyproline that’s unique in youthful skin. Prolyl-hydroxyproline, a collagen fragment which consists of two amino acids only, was found to trigger skin cells in vitro to produce more hyaluronic acid, another component that’s important for boosting the skin’s water content. Hyaluronic acid helps reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles, retaining moisture to the skin and creating a plumping effect. When the skin is protected and hydrated, increased skin cell production can take place, as the skin isn’t busy fighting for hydration. This leads to smoother, plumper skin cells and a gorgeous summer glow!

Skin Ideology aspires to create an environment where people of all ages can find comfort and educated confidence to work through their head-to-toe skincare, body care, health and grooming. Working alongside leading industry brands, they utilise a holistic approach safely combined with research and science to create an understanding of one’s skin and body.
