A HOME WITH HEART

Empowering young women to change the world: St John’s Diocesan School for Girls inspires academic excellence and personal growth.

St John’s Diocesan School for Girls is an independent day and boarding school situated in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, for girls from Grade RR to Grade 12.

At St John’s D.S.G., our difference is all about heart. Individually and collectively, our girls grow to become kind, courageous, and well-rounded. We believe in providing an enriching, balanced education, anchored in God, that empowers our girls to flourish. Our safe, nurturing environment gives them the love and encouragement they need to become resilient and emotionally intelligent women.

In July of 2024, the new home of the Eaglets (the name affectionately given to our Grade RR and R girls) was opened. Our girls, parents, and teachers have all settled in happily.

The concept of creating a dedicated, purpose-designed space for our Eaglets was conceived many years ago, and today, it has blossomed into a magical environment for growth, learning, and fun.

The carefully chosen location at 14 Sanders Road, a truly remarkable house with a rich history, has been transformed into a vibrant learning environment, providing a homely atmosphere with plenty of spacious rooms.

Exceptional planning and thoughtful design have allowed for a calm, flowing indoor space where the girls can explore, learn, and grow their independence.

Light-filled classrooms, a purpose-built bathroom, a kitchen for cooking activities, and creative and sensory play spaces were purposely created. There’s even a therapy room and an equipped sick bay to cater to the needs of our Eaglets requiring additional support.

The property’s expansive outdoor areas create opportunities for an engaging outdoor learning space and playground for the girls. Where a tennis court and swimming pool once stood, a dynamic playground has been created, designed to promote movement, motor skills, and imaginative play.

The garden surrounding the house is home to three indigenous trees, which were transported from the main campus and are now thriving, providing shade and natural play areas for the girls.

Junior School Headmistress, Ms Wendy Laatz, says, “This is the home we envisioned for our Eaglets, and seeing it come to life has been truly magical.”

Ms Laatz and the St John’s D.S.G. Junior School staff look forward to many happy years ahead for our Eaglets in this magnificent new space.
